I bought this Schwinn Airdyne upright bike almost 20 years ago, and it was used when I got the thing. I had ridden one before, since my dad had an even older one. Look, I really would like to get a newer bike. But there’s no need for one since the old Airdyne just keeps going. Here’s the deal…

It’s not a recumbent, but don’t be fooled. It’s a comfortable ride. Why with that big padded seat, you may ride longer than you think you can. The seat’s tough too. The one I’ve ridden for years still looks almost like new. Recumbents have that lay down posture but if you prefer a seating position more like a road bike, the upright exercise bike is more along those lines.

A dual action bike keeps riding interesting. You get to mix it up a bit. Pump with your arms and legs or just arms or just legs. It’s a great way to fight boredom… You get varied motions rather than lots of electronics and computer power.

4. That fan.

The load is created by turning that large fan. That makes for quite a wind storm. The faster you go, the faster the fan turns and the more resistance. The fan makes a lot of noise, but it’s just wind noise. There’s no banging and knocking noise.

5. Durable and stable…

This is a solid machine. It’s all heavy duty and built to last. Here’s the thing… It’s so well built that it’s a very stable platform. So??? That means it just cries out for hard riding. Hard workouts produce all but no swaying and rocking. It’s rock solid… It’s true that lighter bikes often self-destruct simply from the movement and swaying that result from use.

6. How about circuit workouts?

Loafing along is worth something. But for real progress, you can devise circuit workouts. Vary the pace and get best results. You can also get off the bike and do a set of exercises and then hop back on. This bike cries out for hard use. Since the arms get a workout in normal use of one of these dual action bikes, the overall results you get from using one of these is more balanced and tends to help you achieve better overall conditioning.

7. Not too many second sales…

I guess Schwinn rarely sells a second one to anyone… Why would that be? You can’t wear out the first one! You probably will only need one of these machines.

Yesterday was a test of how committed I was to watch what I eat in order not to derail my weight loss plans. Nonya, also known as Peranakan or Straits Chinese is a cross between Chinese and Malays. The colourful kuehs laid out on the table attracted my attention and I must say they look good enough to be eaten immediately. There was the colourful multi layered kueh, ondeh ondeh, Kueh serimuka, Bengka ubi and the list went on. It certainly did not help when the rest of the people kept egging on you to try this one and that one. It was a good thing that I had cut on my sugary intake over the years. In fact, I have my coffee or tea without sugar and I cannot eat stuff that is really sweet.
I reminded myself that I just had my lunch and anything extra now would translate into more calories intake and weight gain. Almost all the key ingredients used in preparation of the kueh included coconut which greatly enhanced the overall taste. Before I hit the target to shave off those extra belly fats, watching what I eat is part of the game plan.
Besides the sweet kuehs, there are the savory versions as well. There was this Rempah Udang which really looked tempting. The ingredients within the glutinous rice are fried dried shrimps with shallots and garlic with coconut shreds. The outer layer of rice was glazed by oil as I can see oil streaks on the rice. I have to admit that these are mouth watering, lip smacking delicious snacks just nice to go with my coffee but at this juncture, I am at the weight loss stage which means strict diet. I guess some of you may be wondering if you have to be so deprived of your favourite food in order to lose weight which may sound like a torture.
It is important to recognize that I am now at the weight loss stage which means a strict diet. I had shared previously some of the rules that I have to strictly adhere to. If I have reached my goal and in the maintenance stage, eating one or two pieces is perfectly fine.
You may think that you really need to be disciplined to give all that delicious although calories laden snack a wide berth. This really depends on how committed you are. Get active and get moving and keep pushing a little bit further on a regular basis.

It really is all about burning the excess calories. By eating better, you will lose weight, but it will slow down to a stop if you don’t get active. It doesn’t matter where you are starting from, it’s how you finish that counts. That’s the important part – finishing.

How much fitter will you be in a week from now? Not much maybe. What about a month from now? Well, you will certainly be a lot fitter than today if you get active. Can you imagine your fitness levels in 3 months? I’m writing this in early June, how could you look and feel at Christmas time? You see, it’s easy to give up after a week or 2 because we can’t see or feel much change, but as sure as it took time to pile on the extra 50 pounds or however much extra weight we may be carrying, it takes time to undo the damage – before it becomes too late and we can’t undo the health issues.
Perseverance is the absolute key, after acceptance of course.

Just move! Walk around the block. Increase it to 2 blocks then 3 and so on. Walk for 10 minutes, then 15 by the end of the week. Before long you will want to get up earlier (yes, want to…), to walk for an hour before the day begins. You’ll be able to walk round 6 blocks in the time it took you to walk round 4 blocks, it really is that simple…it really is.
Additional exercise can be added as you want it.

You know, that’s really all there is to it, moving & eating healthy. Please don’t over complicate things and come up with this excuse or that excuse. It’s your life, use it or lose it.
